PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) -- A man stabbed his pregnant wife several times before trying to take his own life in an apparent drug-induced attack.
Police responded to a Southeast Portland neighborhood on Saturday after witnesses saw a woman screaming for help and gushing blood.
The victim is described as a 30-something woman who is three months pregnant. KOIN-TV reports the victim told a neighbor that her husband was "possessed by the devil" after taking Ketamine, an anesthetic used in human and veterinary medicine that has become a recreational drug known to cause hallucinations.
The victim and her husband were both taken to a hospital. The husband, 43-year-old Brian Nickels, is charged with attempted murder, assault, strangulation and unlawful use of a weapon.
Nickels, his wife and the baby were all expected to survive.
