A former president and chief executive officer of MacKay & Sposito, Inc. has retired.

Al Schauer, of Camas, served most recently as a senior principal at the civil engineering firm. He was responsible for managing new office growth, mentoring new employees and serving as a project advisor.

Schauer has more than 40 years of engineering, surveying, land planning and management experience in public and private sector projects. He has focused on sustainable design, project management and federal and state environmental legislation for 15 years.

Schauer was hired by MacKay and Somps in 1976. The following year, he transferred to MacKay & Sposito, Inc.

Schauer became vice president and partner in 1985. He was named the company’s president in 2002, after founder Dick Sposito retired. Schauer’s son Tim became president in 2009.

Schauer has been recognized regionally for his leadership and expertise regarding stormwater-related laws and regulations.

“Throughout his over 34 years of serving M&S, Al has led this company throughout years of victories and challenges,” said senior vice president Derrick Smith. “His leadership has been critical not only to our success but also in establishing and nurturing our culture. He took our founder’s mission of ‘doing the right thing’ to the next level and commanded respect in our industry, pride from our employees and admiration from many.”

Schauer plans to participate on MacKay & Sposito’s board of directors and provide consulting services.

He has served on numerous local and national boards including the Building Industry of Association of Southwestern Washington, Responsible Growth Forum Board, Legacy Salmon Creek Hospital, Clark County Stormwater Manual Committee and the Land Development Council for the city of Portland.

MacKay & Sposito offers full service civil engineering, land and construction surveying, land-use planning, landscape architecture and construction management services. The firm has more than 80 employees companywide, at offices in Vancouver, Kennewick, Federal Way, Sherwood, Ore. and Bend, Ore.
