China leads qualifying for women’s 10-meter diving

SHANGHAI (AP) — Chinese divers qualified first and second in women’s 10-meter platform diving at the world championships.

Hu Yadan was first with 382.25 points after Wednesday’s five-dive preliminary. Her teammate, Chen Ruolin, was second at 370.30, extending China’s streak of leading every qualifying session. Chen won the silver in Rome two years ago.

Meaghan Benfeito of Canada was third at 336.90, followed by Pandelela Rinong of Malaysia at 330.70. Defending world champion Paola Espinosa of Mexico was fifth.

American Brittany Viola was 14th and teammate Jessica Parratto was 17th.

The top 18 divers advanced to the semifinal later Wednesday.
