RITZVILLE, Wash. (AP) — The head volleyball coach at Eastern Oregon University has been killed in a two-vehicle crash near Ritzville, Wash.

Washington State Patrol Trooper Shawn Pichette says 25-year-old Hailey Pearce of LaGrande, Ore., appears not to have seen a pickup truck ahead of her Monday on Highway 395. The trooper says the pickup driven by 67-year-old Robert Pence of Lind, Wash., was a rear escort for a farming combine being driven down the road.

The trooper says Pearce was traveling the speed limit of 70 mph when she drove into the back of Pence’s truck. He was not hurt.

Pichette says Pearce was wearing her seat belt but her driver’s side airbag did not deploy.

She joined Eastern Oregon’s coaching staff in 2010.

EOU Athletic Director Rob Cashell called her “a fantastic coach and more importantly a wonderful person.”
