Letter: Republicans show hypocrisy

The Columbian
Published: July 19, 2011, 12:00am

At a recent debate by Republican presidential candidates, most made a big point of broadcasting their Christianity, and many continue to do so at every public opportunity. Interestingly, most of these same Republicans are pushing to reduce taxes on the wealthy by 30 percent, while demanding a reduction of the nation’s debt burden by cutting or eventually eliminating Social Security, Medicare and other programs that help working families, the poor and the elderly. If I recall my Bible studies, Jesus threw the money changers from the temple and gave loaves and fishes, not to mention love and hope, to the poor — not the other way around. So it seems for many important Republican figures, hypocrisy is the new Christianity.
