EVERETT, Wash. (AP) — A Snohomish County sheriff’s officer says a man believed to be in his 20s is dead after he reportedly was held down by a 67-year-old homeowner who suspected the younger man of trying to steal an outboard motor.

Capt. Dave Bales says deputies called Tuesday to a home in the south Everett area found the younger man on the ground, not breathing. Efforts to revive him were unsuccessful. He was not immediately identified. The county medical examiner will be asked to determine the cause of death.

The unidentified homeowner says he called police after he spotted a young man trying to take a motor from his boat. The boat owner says he held the man down to detain him for police.

Bales says the boat owner was taken to a hospital as a precaution for exertion and anxiety. The investigation continues.
