PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — A Portland man has been sentenced to life in prison for the murder of his wife, whom he strangled and stuffed in a duffel bag, then dumped off on a remote forest road south of Portland.

The Oregonian reports Multnomah County judge Janice Wilson handed down the sentence on Wednesday. Brian Cole must serve at least 25 years in prison before he’s eligible for parole.

Cole was found guilty of killing Heather Mallory after an argument at their apartment in Portland in 2008. Mallory’s body was found two years later by a federal worker.

During the trial, prosecutors argued that Cole was angry over his wife’s affair and worried about losing custody of his young son in a divorce.

The couple’s son will remain in the care of his grandparents.
