VANCOUVER, Wash. (AP) — A judge in Vancouver has placed an aggravated murder case on hold after learning that the defendant’s lawyer is dating a former detective who helped with the investigation.

The Columbian newspaper reports that Clark County prosecutor Tony Golik asked for the defense attorney, Bob Yosef, to be removed from the case Wednesday.

Judge Robert Lewis set a hearing for Aug. 5 over whether to appoint a new lawyer for Dennis Wolter, who is accused of stabbing his girlfriend May 26 and dumping her body down an embankment.

Yosef is one of the few attorneys in Clark County approved to handle potential death-penalty cases. He is dating Vanvouver police officer Jane Easter, who used to be part of the department’s major crimes unit but now works patrol.

The prosecutor says the situation could prove grounds for an appeal.
