ASTORIA, Ore. (AP) — A U.S. Coast Guard leader based in Oregon who helped coordinate the rescue of more than 33,500 people after Hurricane Katrina is resigning his command.

Capt. Scott Kitchen, a 25-year veteran of the Coast Guard, will be relieved on Friday in a change-of-command ceremony in Astoria.

His replacement, Capt. Mark Reynolds, was a deputy commander at the North Bend station from 2006 to 2009.

The North Bend station covers Pacific City, Ore., to the California border, approximately 220 miles of coastline and 50 miles offshore.
