PHOENIX (AP) — The Arizona Diamondbacks called up infielder Cody Ransom from Triple-A Reno on Thursday to replace injured shortstop Stephen Drew.

Drew broke his right ankle in Wednesday night’s game against Milwaukee on a fourth-inning slide to home plate.

Diamondbacks manager Kirk Gibson said after the game that Drew is out for the season and probably needs surgery.

Arizona put Drew on the 15-day disabled list Thursday and picked up the contract of the 35-year-old Ransom.

Ransom was hitting .331 for Reno with 26 homers, 28 doubles, three triples and 89 RBIs in 92 games.

The Diamondbacks signed Ransom as a free agent last November. He has played parts of eight major-league seasons with San Francisco, Houston, Philadelphia and the New York Yankees.
