Letter: Marriage does not apply to everyone

Portland and Vancouver had gay pride events. Actions identified for centuries as “sin” are now done with “pride.” The irresponsible, convoluted argument for gay marriage is that of constitutional equal rights under the law. Legal marriage benefits do not discriminate against gays. They honor marriage for the order it brings in ensuring health and success of our nation’s children.

Parental families deserve status. They selflessly sacrifice lifelong wealth and countless hours to their children. Emotional investment is incalculable, and family bonds are the primary source of patriotic strength. Children become the nation’s producers, consumers and taxpayers. They replace us in retirement, the military, and tend us in old age. Expecting targeted legal benefits to apply to everyone is stupidity. Why must we allow mockery of our sacred vows of matrimony and naturally resulting parenthood by reducing it all to an attitude of “What’s in it for me”?
