The Columbian
Published:

A 30-year-old Portland climber fell off Beacon Rock and died Sunday evening, Skamania County sheriff’s officials said.

Rescuers were on the scene, where it was first believed the man only suffered a broken arm and leg. The accident happened about 5:30 p.m.

Skamania County Undersheriff Dave Cox said the man’s name would not be released Sunday night.

Cox said the man and a partner were rappelling down the popular South Corner route. He believed the man fell more than 100 feet.

Beacon Rock is an 848-foot-tall monolith along the Columbia River, 35 miles east of Vancouver. A trail ascends to the top.
