SHANGHAI (AP) — Ryan Lochte overtook American teammate Michael Phelps with about 50 meters to go to win the men’s 200-meter freestyle at the world swimming championships.
Lochte finished in a time of 1 minute, 44.44 seconds on Tuesday, with Phelps taking the silver in a time of 1:44.79. World record holder Paul Biedermann of Germany took the bronze in 1:44.88.
Park Tae-hwan of South Korea, who won the 400 free Sunday on the opening night of the eight-day meet, was fourth.
Biedermann beat Phelps and took away his world record in Rome in 2009, where everyone was wearing high-tech bodysuits that resulted in 43 world records but are now banned.
