SHANGHAI (AP) — Australian James Magnussen thought he’d be somewhat of an unknown quantity and surprise a few people in his first international swim meet.
After setting blistering times in the pool this week, the rest of the field in the 100-meter freestyle knows his name.
Magnussen set the fastest time in the semifinals Wednesday in 47.90 seconds, followed by American sprinter Nathan Adrian and William Meynard of France in third.
That came just three nights after Magnussen swam the opening leg of Australia’s gold-medal winning relay team against Michael Phelps in an eye-popping 47.49. His previous personal best was 48.29.
