USA to be challenged by big and small nations

DENVER (AP) — No longer will the race to win the most Olympic medals be a race for second, behind the United States.

With the Olympics starting one year from Wednesday, Alan Ashley, chief of sport performance for the U.S. Olympic Committee, concedes he’s heading into the final planning phase feeling pressure from countries both big and small, all of whom are increasing their spending and their efforts as they seek world-class Olympic programs.

Luciano Barra of Italy, globally respected as one of the top predictors of how the medals table will turn out, has projected Russia will win the London Games medal count with 90, followed by China with 88 and the United States with 75.
