SPOKANE, Wash. (AP) — Lincoln County sheriff’s rescue crews have recovered the body of a 19-year-old Odessa, Wash., man from the water near Lake Roosevelt’s eastern shore.

The sheriff’s office believes Nicholas Campbell drowned Saturday evening while out boating with friends. KHQ reports that officials say a friend of Campbell’s suggested they jump in the water while the boat was moving at about 20 miles an hour.

The friend reportedly popped back up right away and Campbell resurfaced briefly but then disappeared. The teens were not wearing life jackets.

KHQ says Lincoln County Undersheriff Kelly Watkins not only helped organize the search but was a neighbor of Campbell’s. He describes the teen as an athlete who excelled at football, basketball and baseball. His body was recovered Tuesday.
