Walla Walla growers try fresh-frozen garbanzos

WALLA WALLA, Wash. (AP) -- Some Walla Walla farmers are growing garbanzo beans for the fresh-frozen food market.

The beans are usually sold dried or in cans. But about 1,000 acres of garbanzos are under cultivation for the first time for a new market that may appeal to health-conscious consumers.

The Union-Bulletin reports when this crop is harvested the beans will be chilled and processed at Twin City Foods in Ellensburg. Clearwater Country Foods of Lewiston, Idaho, contracted with the farmers. The SunOpta company of Canada is handling sales and marketing.
