SEATTLE (AP) — A 13-mile tunnel to carry sewage from a new treatment plant near Woodinville to Puget Sound is nearly complete.
The Seattle Times reports diggers are expected to connect segments of the tunnel by September.
Digging the 13-foot diameter tunnel as deep as 425 feet underground has been a troubled project. Tunneling was suspended in in 2009 when a digging machine failed. A dispute with the contractor is still in court.
The cost of the treatment plant known as Brightwater is nearing $2 billion. It will begin operating in September, using other outfall pipes. The new tunnel is expected to be in use in about a year.
