SPOKANE, Wash. (AP) — A state prison inmate from Spokane has been sentenced to 23 more months in jail for tax fraud.

Richard Vancil pled guilty to two counts of making a false claim for income tax refunds. While incarcerated at Coyote Ridge Corrections Center in Connell, the 44-year-old Vancil submitted approximately 63 false claims for income tax refunds totaling more than $92,000.

The U.S. Attorrney’s Office said Vancil filed three claims for tax refunds in his name, and the rest in the names of other inmates.

His scheme was detected by the state Department of Corrections and the IRS, but not before the IRS issued refunds on the false claims totaling $54,781. Vancil was also ordered Wednesday to pay that money back.
