GRESHAM, Ore. (AP) -- Police in a Portland suburb say a young man punched an 84-year-old woman at least 20 times and also hit a second woman in an unprovoked attack at a transit station.
The 84-year-old, identified as Muriel Morgan, suffered a broken nose, concussion and scalp gash in Wednesday's beating in Gresham. She was treated at a hospital and released.
Officer Malaka Kerbs says witnesses report the attacker first punched a 56-year-old woman in the head. She ran but he followed, hitting her several more times. When she ran off the platform, he turned to Morgan, who was sitting waiting for a bus. Finally, the attacker walked off. Responding police had to use a stun gun to subdue him for an arrest.
The Oregonian says a 19-year-old man described as a transient from Tennessee was arraigned Thursday on charges of attempted second-degree assault, fourth-degree assault and interfering with public transportation. Cordarius Jeffreys is held on $250,000 bail.
