MCMINNVILLE, Ore. (AP) — A fire that destroyed an aircraft storage unit in Oregon caused an estimated $20 million in damage.

The Oregonian reports a passing driver reported the fire Thursday night on Evergreen International Aviation property in McMinnville.

McMinnville Fire Department officials said three 55-gallon drums of some kind of combustible or flammable liquid ruptured throughout the night, igniting fireballs that could be seen from miles away.

The 600-by-100 foot open-sided pole barn that was destroyed housed museum displays and helicopter and other aircraft parts containing magnesium, preventing fire crews from spraying water because it could cause explosions.

Crews let the fire burn all night until it burned itself out Friday morning. The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives has been called to help investigate.
