Vancouver analyst named to Camas council

A Vancouver city employee has been appointed to the Camas City Council to fill a vacancy created after former councilor Scott Higgins was named the city’s new mayor last month.

Shannon Turk, who works as a management analyst, was named to the city council Monday night during a special meeting. She was selected over Ralph Schmidt, who worked 35 years in the information technology field.

Turk, a Camas resident since 2002, will hold the council position until Dec. 5. The remainder of Higgins’ term until Dec. 31, 2013, will be up for grab’s in November’s general election.

Turk and Margaret Tweet filed to run for the Ward 3 seat during a special three-day filing period between July 6-8.

Higgins resigned his council seat after being appointed mayor June 27. The previous mayor, Paul Dennis, resigned his seat in late May to lead the Camas-Washougal Economic Development Association.
