Ore. AG backs Clatsop DA over court authority
Friday, July 29, 2011
ASTORIA, Ore. (AP) -- An Oregon prosecutor says it's time for the city of Astoria to hand over drunken driving cases to a higher court.
Clatsop County District Attorney Josh Marquis wants to move driving under the influence of intoxicants cases from the Astoria Municipal Court to Clatsop County Circuit Court, which Marquis said is better able to handle those cases.
And The Daily Astorian reports that Marquis has the support of Oregon Attorney General John Kroger.
But Astoria Mayor Willis Van Dusen says city officials believe the municipal court is able to handle the caseload.
Marquis says he's giving the city until Sept. 1 to change its mind -- otherwise, everybody may end up in court to settle the dispute.
