JOINT BASE LEWIS-MCCHORD, Wash. (AP) — Drivers may soon be getting some help in the congested part of Interstate 5 that passes Joint Base Lewis-McChord.
But The News-Tribune reports big improvements are still several miles and millions of dollars away.
As a short-term fix, the Washington State Department of Transportation is installing traffic meters on the on-ramps serving the Lewis-McChord exits in north Thurston County.
The stop-and-go signals are intended to prevent merging traffic from clogging the freeway.
State officials are also installing seven traffic cameras along the corridor to provide real-time traffic conditions to the agency and the public.
