LONDON (AP) — Brad Friedel has agreed to join Tottenham from English Premier League rival Aston Villa.

The 40-year-old Friedel will provide competition to Brazilian ‘keeper Heurelho Gomes, who committed a number of costly errors last season.

Friedel is moving for free because his Villa contract expires at the end of the month.

Tottenham manager Harry Redknapp says “Brad is a top goalkeeper of real quality who has great experience.”

He holds the record for consecutive topflight appearances, extending it to 275 matches last season before leaving Villa after three years.

Friedel, who made 82 appearances for the United States, played for the Columbus Crew, Galatasaray and Brondby before moving to England in 1997 to join Liverpool. He spent eight years at Blackburn.
