CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (AP) — Another season for Garrett Wittels was dominated by a streak. This one involved the entire Florida International team.

FIU went an NCAA-best 17 straight games without a loss earlier this season. That run certainly didn’t come with the day-in, day-out stress of the star shortstop’s 56-game hitting streak that ended earlier this year.

The Panthers enter their NCAA regional at North Carolina having lost just twice in their last 23 games. They want to keep it going when the tournament starts Friday.

Second-seeded FIU (40-18-1) plays third-seeded James Madison (40-17) in one opener before the top-seeded Tar Heels (45-14) take on Maine (32-22).

Wittels said Thursday that “last year was amazing, with the whole hitting streak, but this year’s just as good.”
