PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — The U.S. attorney for Oregon says a 39-year-old man has been sentenced to 40 years in prison for taking a 15-year-old girl from Seattle and forcing her to work as a prostitute in Portland.

Dwight Holton says the case sends a clear message to others “engaged in this form of modern-day slavery.” U.S. District Judge Michael Mosman sentenced James Albert Jackson on Friday in Portland after Jackson earlier pleaded guilty to one count of an indictment charging him with sex trafficking of a minor through force.

In September 2008, the girl was arrested for prostitution. Holton says she agreed to accept help from police out of fear Jackson would kill her.

Holton says Jackson promised the girl a nice house, car and family before she left Seattle, then beat her, addicted her to cocaine and forced her into prostitution in Portland, taking her earnings.
