Arizona State routs Charlotte 16-1

TEMPE, Ariz. (AP) — Kramer Champlin threw seven innings of one-hit ball and Xorge Carrillo had five hits, including a three-run home run in the five-run fourth inning in Arizona State’s 16-1 victory over Charlotte on Saturday night in the NCAA Tempe Regional.

Charlotte (43-15) will play Arkansas, a 3-0 winner over New Mexico, in an elimination game Sunday. The winner will Arizona State (41-16) on Sunday night.

Champlin (9-3) struck out nine and walked five over seven innings, allowing only Ross Steedley’s leadoff double in the third. Steedley was thrown out at third by catcher Carrillo on Justin Roland’s subsequent sacrifice bunt attempt.

Josh McAlister and Josh Moody pitched the eighth and ninth innings, completing the two-hitter. Charlotte scored a run on a sacrifice fly in the ninth.

Carrillo’s first home run of the season was part of a 5-for-6 day that included a double. Riccio Torrez’s two-run triple in the fourth gave the Sun Devils a 7-0 lead. Andrew Aplin had three hits and drove in two runs.

Charlotte starter Tyler Barnette (9-2) allowed four runs on five hits over three innings, leaving right before Carrillo’s home run.

The 49ers only got one runner to third and stranded seven against Champlin.
