RICHLAND, Wash. (AP) — A man fatally shot in an encounter with Richland, Wash., police has been identified as 27-year-old James Dean Schultz, a Yakima Valley resident.

Police said Monday that officers were investigating several stolen vehicle reports early Sunday, with Schultz identified as a possible suspect. Five officers responded to a suspicious person report that was believed to be related to a stolen vehicle. Officers found a gold-colored sedan occupied by five people including Schultz. In a statement, police said only that shots were fired and Schultz died at the scene. One other occupant of the car was arrested for unlawful possession of a firearm. The rest were released.

The five officers have been placed on paid leave while the shooting is investigated. The Tri-City Herald said they have not been identified.
