Man burning weeds starts bush fire in Salem

SALEM, Ore. (AP) -- A man using a torch to burn weeds in his yard Sunday afternoon set fire to bushes that scorched the side of a neighbor's home in Salem.

Police say neighbors used a garden hose until firefighters arrived. Neighbors also evacuated a 92-year-old resident.

Firefighters removed siding from the home to make sure the fire had not spread into the wall. Damage is estimated at $15,000.

The 57-year-old man who was killing weeds was cited for reckless burning.
