BEIRUT (AP) — A Syrian government spokesman says the country’s military “intermittently” lost control of areas around a tense northern town where state television reported an armed attack on security forces, killing 120.

Syrian Information Minister Adnan Mahmoud says the attack began at dawn and that the armed men were periodically in control of some areas around the town of Jisr al-Shughour. He said the men fighting security forces were armed with grenades and automatic weapons and promised the military would bring the area under control.

The army has carried out days of deadly assaults on protesters in the area calling for the end of President Bashar Assad’s rule.
