SALEM, Ore. (AP) — Oregon wildlife authorities want to kill another wolf from the Imnaha pack after confirming that a calf was killed outside Joseph.

Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife wolf coordinator Russ Morgan said in a statement Monday that taking action when wolves kill livestock is crucial to building long-term public support for restoring wolves to the state.

But conservation groups disagree.

Rob Klavins of Oregon Wild says the department needs to be more open with the public about the steps it is taking, and lethal action should only be a last resort.

The department recently killed two wolves from the Imnaha pack in the northeastern corner of the state in response to livestock attacks.
