OLYMPIA, Wash. (AP) — Gov. Chris Gregoire has directed that flags at Washington state buildings be lowered to half-staff Tuesday in memory of a Port Angeles soldier killed in Afghanistan.
Capt. Joseph William Schultz was one of three soldiers killed May 29 by a roadside bomb. They were assigned to the 3rd Special Forces Group at Fort Bragg, N.C.
His mother, Betsy Reed Schultz of Port Angeles, says he grew up mostly in Sacramento, Calif., and graduated from the University of Oregon with bachelor’s degrees in political science and economics.
Capt. Schultz was 36.
