Letter: Good citizens reflect good community

The Columbian
Published: June 6, 2011, 5:00pm

As I look back on all that I have been exposed to recently, I find myself appreciating the blessings that I have had in this community.

I had the privilege of knowing Emmett Rice, whose memorial service was last week. He retired in our community for the beauty of the Northwest and the people he got to know.

He had a distinguished career as a member of the Federal Reserve Board and was the second African-American to serve. He not only left his mark but also left a legacy of his values in his daughter and son, who are following up with their own outstanding careers and contributions.

I then had the opportunity to attend the First Citizen reception honoring Hal Dengerink, a great contributor to our community. He was instrumental in the establishment and success of Washington State University Vancouver. He has served the Columbia River Crossing task force, the Southwest Washington Medical Center trustee board, and the formation of Fort Vancouver National Historic Trust.

We are all fortunate to live in this country and this community where we have leaders like this.

Our main reflection in the days surrounding Memorial Day, of course, should be concerning our veterans and their service. I especially give thanks for all who have served our country in the military and who have made so many sacrifices for all of us.
