VENETA, Ore. (AP) — An alert letter carrier in the Willamette Valley community of Veneta, Ore., did more than deliver the mail on her route — she summoned help for an older woman trapped in her home.

Carrier Carol Huddleston has delivered mail to Veneta residents for about 16 years, including 10 years on the same route, so she’s gotten to know many of the residents.

When she rang the doorbell to deliver a package Wednesday at one house, she just heard muffled calls.

KEZI says the elderly resident had had some sort of accident and been trapped in her home for three days. The front door was locked so Huddleston went around back and could see the woman on the floor. With the back door locked as well, the carrier called 911.

Fire Chief Terry Ney praised Huddleston for her alert thinking.

Emergency crews tell KEZI the older woman is in stable condition.
