Federal Way kidnapping suspect competent for trial

KENT, Wash. (AP) — The man accused of abducting and assaulting an 8-year-old Federal Way girl has been found mentally competent to stand trial.

At the same hearing Wednesday in King County Superior Court, 28-year-old Benjamin H. Trinh pleaded not guilty to a charge of kidnapping with sexual motivation.

The girl disappeared April 11 while playing near a school. Police say he took her shopping and swimming before taking her to his Tacoma home where she was assaulted.

She was dropped off near her home that night. Trinh was arrested the next day.

He is being held on $1 million bail.

Family members told investigators that Trinh has mental health issues. He was examined at Western State Hospital.
