JUNEAU, Alaska (AP) — The chairman of the House Natural Resources Committee is scheduled to be in Alaska this week to assess the state’s energy potential and the infrastructure needed to more fully tap into it.

Republican Rep. Doc Hastings of Washington state plans to join Gov. Sean Parnell and Alaska Republican Rep. Don Young for a day-long tour Thursday.

It will include a fly-over of the National Petroleum Reserve-Alaska, visiting the trans-Alaska pipeline and attending a community meeting in the village of Kaktovik. A discussion of potential off-shore oil and gas development is also planned.

A spokesman for Hastings’ committee said the congressman initiated the tour to help get a better sense for the energy opportunities in Alaska.
