LAGRANDE, Ore. (AP) — Oregon State Police say a multiple vehicle crash involving a cattle trailer has killed one man and injured at least four other people in northeastern Oregon. Eight cows and nine calves were also reported killed, with other cattle injured.

The Wednesday afternoon crash near the Union-Wallowa county line closed State Highway 82 for hours.

Lt. Gregg Hastings says a truck pulling a box trailer loaded with cattle was traveling eastbound downhill in a highway work zone where traffic narrowed to one lane. Hastings says the driver was unable to stop and sideswiped three westbound vehicles. The truck and trailer then overturned on top of a fourth vehicle.

The truck driver was dead at the scene. He was not immediately identified.
