Ore. city approves transgender health benefits

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) -- City commissioners in Portland have approved a plan to include some transgender health care benefits in the city's health care plan.

KPTV reports that sexual reassignment surgeries will be included in the city plan with the unanimous vote Wednesday.

The cost projection for adding coverage for sexual reassignment surgery is a little over $32,000.

The decision makes Portland the third local government in the country -- after San Francisco and Multnomah County in Oregon -- to provide transgender coverage for its employees.

With the plan's approval, transgender city workers will be able to select one of the city's health plans and have their gender reassignment surgery covered by their health insurance.
