WESTON, Ore. (AP) — Police in the small northeast Oregon town of Weston say an owl that built a home above the city’s water has made the water supply unsafe to drink.

Sgt. Joshua Henningsen says Weston’s public works employees found E. coli bacteria in the water when they conducted a regular test Tuesday.

Employees searched and found the owl nest. Henningsen says the owl has been defecating in the water.

The officer advised residents Thursday to boil their water or drink bottled water.

The East Oregonian says the city northeast of Pendleton has added chlorine to the water to kill the bacteria. Henningsen says he hopes the problem will be cleared up by Monday.
