CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (AP) — North Carolina starters Patrick Johnson and Kent Emanuel hope to build on last weekend’s strong pitching performances when the Tar Heels face Stanford in the NCAA super regionals.

The Tar Heels (48-14) earned the No. 3 national seed for the NCAA tournament and rolled through the regional, winning three games by a combined score of 27-3. In two of those games, Johnson and Emanuel combined to throw 16 shutout innings with 16 strikeouts while allowing 10 hits.

Coach Mike Fox says the two will start Friday and Saturday in the best-of-3 series against the Cardinal (35-20), who upset home-standing Cal State Fullerton and won last weekend’s Fullerton Regional.

Stanford has won five straight games overall.
