PESHAWAR, Pakistan (AP) — A senior police official says an explosion in a residential and commercial area of the northwestern Pakistani city of Peshawar has killed at least seven people.

Dost Mohammed says a small blast went off just after midnight Sunday that drew rescue workers and police to the site. A few minutes later a large explosion rocked the area, causing the seven fatalities and injuring 35 people.

Mohammed says officials are trying to determine what caused the blasts. One senior police official was among the wounded. The identities of the other casualties were unclear.

The attack took place across the street from the offices of the top political agent to Khyber, part of Pakistan’s volatile tribal region. Housing for army soldiers is also nearby.
