Firefighters from Clark County Fire District 6 will be stopping helmeted kids riding bikes and skateboards throughout this month to award them for being safe.

A “Safe Rider Citation” earns a child a free reduced-fat ice cream come from participating McDonald’s locations, the fire district announced in a news release.

The initiative was formed out of a partnership with the National Safe Kids Campaign and McDonald’s.

In 2004, more than 18,700 head injuries were treated in emergency rooms and resulted from skateboard accidents, according the Safe Kids Campaign. Each year, about 140 kids are killed while riding a bike. The majority of these injuries and deaths could have been prevented if the kids were wearing helmets, according to the bulletin.
