149 set to run for elected positions in Clark County

Clark County residents will have plenty of candidates to choose from when filling out their ballots this November.

Filing week ended Friday with 149 candidates vying for 93 elected positions in Clark County.

Some positions, such as Woodland mayor, drew numerous candidates. All city council seats on the ballot in Battle Ground, Washougal and Vancouver have at least two candidates. The mayor and all town council positions in Yacolt are contested, as well.

Several school board and fire district positions drew only one candidate.

Per state law, two positions that did not receive filings will receive three-day extensions. Perspective candidates can file for the Hockinson School District Position No. 5 and Cemetery District No. 5, Position 2, at the Clark County Elections Department, 1408 Franklin St., until 5 p.m. Wednesday.

On the final day of filing week, Vancouver businessman and NoTolls.com financier David Madore tossed his hat in the ring for a position on the Port of Vancouver Board of Commissioners.

Madore is challenging commission President Brian Wolfe for his seat on the board. Wolfe, a Vancouver attorney, was elected to his first six-year term in 2005.

Two Vancouver City Council positions will require a primary election this summer.

Vancouver City Council members Bart Hansen (Position 4) and Pat Campbell (Position 6) each face two challengers. The candidates will face off first in the Aug. 16 primary, then in the Nov. 8 general election.

Republican Craig Riley, a Vancouver insurance and investment adviser, is challenging Rep. Sharon Wylie, D-Vancouver, for the 49th District seat.

Wylie, a former local government lobbyist, was appointed to the seat in April after Jim Jacks resigned a month earlier. Soon after her appointment, Riley announced his intention to run for office.

In terms of sheer volume, the Woodland mayor’s race is the most crowded. Three council members — Marilee McCall, J.J. Burke and Darwin Rounds — are among five candidates seeking to fill Chuck Blum’s seat. Blum will not seek re-election.

La Center Mayor Jim Irish and Yacolt Mayor James Weldon will each face two challengers.

Three of Washougal’s four city council races feature three or more candidates. Councilman Rod Morris will face the most challengers: three.

The Woodland City Council also has two races with three candidates. Woodland council member Aaron Christopherson, elected in 2007 at age 19, will not seek re-election.

The vast majority of school district races ended before they started.

The Ridgefield School District seat held by Wendi Morris is an anomaly in that she faces two challengers.

Two recently appointed members of the Battle Ground school board, Ken Root and Mavis Nickels, have filed to retain their seats. Each will face one challenger this fall.
