ALBANY, Ore. (AP) — An Albany city councilman will resign his position after a cancer diagnosis.

The Albany Democrat Herald reports 82-year-old Ralph Reid Jr. stepped down from the seat he held since 1995.

Reid has focused on the courts, public safety and public works, as well as financial and legislative issues.

He learned of his illness in April.

He was re-elected in November, and his council term is set to expire in December 2014.
