NEW YORK (AP) — Linet Masai of Kenya defended her title in the NYRR New York Mini 10K on Saturday, winning a race dedicated to running great Grete Waitz.

Jack Waitz led the first group of men to run in the women’s only race that honored his late wife, who died of cancer in April. She won a record nine New York City Marathons and was tied for most Mini victories with five.

Masai ran away from a field that featured 12 Olympians to win in 31 minutes, 40 seconds, beating Aheza Kiros of Ethiopia by 29 seconds.

The race also marked the return to competition of Deena Kastor, the American marathon record holder. She finished 25th in 35:00 in her first race since giving birth to her first child 312 months ago.
