SCAPPOOSE, Ore. — A Vancouver man was arrested on suspicion of criminally negligent homicide Saturday, after a passenger riding in the back of the pickup he was driving fell out and died of his injuries.
First responders arriving at the scene, on Dike Road southwest of Scappoose, at 6:12 p.m., found a man in his 30s lying in the road, and were unable to revive him, according to a news bulletin from the Columbia County Sheriff’s Office.
Officers investigating the incident said Nicholas Kay, 26, of Vancouver, had been driving under the influence of intoxicants and arrested him. Police added the criminally negligent homicide charge later Saturday evening.
Kay was driving southbound in a white Ford pickup when the male passenger in the bed of the pickup fell out and hit the paved roadway, police said. The victim has not been positively identified.
Deputies are continuing to investigate the incident, along with the Scappoose Police Department and the Oregon State Police.
