GRINDELWALD, Switzerland (AP) — Damiano Cunego of Italy has taken the overall lead in the Tour of Switzerland on Monday despite finishing second in a sprint to Peter Sagan of Slovakia in Stage 3.

Sagan sprinted clear near the line to finish in 3 hours, 9 minutes, 47 seconds over the mountainous, 66.9-mile route from Brig to Grindelwald. Cunego was second in the same time, while Denmark’s Jakob Fuglsang trailed Sagan by 21 seconds in third place.

Cunego took a 54 second lead in the overall standings ahead of Colombia’s Juan Mauricio Soler, who began a gray, misty day with the yellow jersey.

Bauke Mollema of the Netherlands retained third place overall, trailing Cunego by 1:16.

Tuesday’s fourth stage, 123.3 miles from Grindelwald to Huttwil, favors sprinters.
