Firefighters quelled a fire Monday night in The Vision Clinic, 7600 N.E. Hazel Dell Ave. That is the office of Dr. Frank R. Mossman, a longtime optometrist.

Fire District 6 was alerted at 8:42 p.m., with the headquarters station only several blocks from the clinic.

Firefighters hooked a hose to a hydrant and, just before 9 p.m., reported the fire was knocked down, including in the attic.

No one was reported injured, said Dawn Johnson, spokeswoman for Fire District 6.

No flames were seen but there had been heavy smoke, especially in the rear of the building.

The Vancouver Fire Department also sent engines and crews to help, Johnson said.

Firefighters were using powerful fans to ventilate the building and checking for hidden hot spots.

About 9:05 p.m., a fire commander asked that a deputy fire marshal be sent to the scene to investigate. The cause and a dollar damage estimate were not available at The Columbian’s press time.

Mossman has been at the clinic for 30 years, a family member said.
