Letter: Legislators protected farmlands

The Columbian
Published: June 12, 2011, 5:00pm

As executive director of the Columbia Land Trust, representing nearly 2,000 members, I would like to thank our state legislators for funding the Washington Wildlife and Recreation Program. This enables the Land Trust to protect forever a five-generation organic dairy farm in Trout Lake. Working with farmers and funding from the WWRP, the Land Trust will conserve one of our nation’s largest organic valley dairies. With farmlands disappearing, protecting this farm provides more than 20 full-time and seasonal jobs, brings millions of dollars into our local community, keeps our food local, and protects one of the most scenic valleys in our region.

Our legislators stood up for the integrity of the WWRP grant program and for keeping Washington a state that produces food and provides unparalleled recreation, wildlife and sheer natural beauty.
